Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) has been revamped to better align with today’s objectives and evolving demand. As a country made up of Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, are you aware that Malaysia has not only one MM2H, we have in fact three types of MM2H in total. Each offers different pathways under the MM2H framework to suit diverse lifestyle and residency preferences.
Under the National MM2H programme run by the federal government, applicants can choose from three tiers — Silver, Gold, and Platinum — each offering varying visa durations, fixed deposit requirements, and benefits.
While national MM2H visa holders are not restricted to living in the 11 states in Peninsular, those who intend to reside in East Malaysia should be aware of another alternative options.
Do you know? Both Sabah and Sarawak have their own state-based MM2H programme, the S-MM2H for Sabah and Sarawak — each with its own set of eligibility criteria and conditions, tailored for those seeking long-term residence in these two states.
Sarawak - MM2H
It took effect in January 2025, and it allows foreigners to live in Sarawak for up to 10 years while working, residing and conducting business in Sarawak. It is regulated by the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts.
The S-MM2H programme offers retirees the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful and fulfilling lifestyle in Sarawak with a 10-year renewable pass. With the flexibility to work part-time or run a small business, full tax exemption on incoming offshore funds, and the option to withdraw up to 50% of the fixed deposit after one year for them to settle in comfortably whether it's to purchase a property, for healthcare, or other housing needs. Property purchase is optional, with homes starting from RM500,000, it makes Sarawak an attractive and affordable retirement destination.
Sabah - MM2H
It received the greenlight from the federal government for full administration by the State Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Environment (KePKAS) in July 2024.
The Sabah MM2H programme offers an attractive and flexible pathway for long-term stay, with a renewable 5+5 year Social Visit Pass. Participants are eligible to purchase residential properties from RM600,000, bring along dependents to reside in Sabah, and are open to select based on Silver, Gold and Platinum based on lifestyle and financial profile. With lower entry requirements compared to West Malaysia and Sarawak, Sabah MM2H appeals to those seeking a relaxed lifestyle, affordability, and long-term stability in a nature-rich environment of flora and fauna.
With the launch of Sarawak & Sabah MM2H respectively. It separates each program from one another, from its administration, policies, objectives and down to its terms and conditions to enhance each area and local communities.
For those seeking space, balance, and a different rhythm of life, it’s worth exploring the terms and discovering whether Sabah or Sarawak could be your next home.
